Notes from the road

African Highlights

In terms of biking, South Africa is the place to be. It’s tough to top either the ride up Bainskloof Pass near Wellington or the coastal ride from Kleinmond to Gordon’s Bay.

For hiking, it’s tough to top gorilla trekking in Rwanda, looking for lemurs in Madagascar or walking with cheetah in Namibia. Places we love to stay in Africa include Mont Rochelle, set among the vineyards of South Africa’s Cape Winelands; Madagascar’s Miavana Private Island; and Kasbah Tamadot, in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Special Gray & Co. friends include Rudy and Marlice at Naankuse Conservation, genius GM Edward Morton at La Residence and the amazing expert guide Mohammed Bouskri in Marrakech.

While on the continent, don’t miss a visit to Cape Town’s modern art Zeitz-MOCAA museum, Kigali’s Genocide Memorial, Miavana’s Cabinet de Curiosités or Yves Saint Laurent’s home in Marrakech’s Jardins Marjorelle. We can arrange exclusive, curator-led access to all of them.
