Happy Horses in Costa Rica

Notes from the road

JUST BACK FROM: Costa Rica

The Central American country of Costa Rica is well known for pristine jungles, beaches, charming critters, impressive birds and the friendliest of hospitality. Flights bring travellers easily to either San Jose or Liberia airports. But it’s not easy linking together the myriad top experiences around the country – roads can be darn twisty! Thankfully, it’s possible to charter flights, private yachts and luxury SUV’s to achieve max comfort.

Energy saved can be used up on suspension bridge walks, jungle hikes & bikes, rafting, birding, zip lining, surfing and so much more. In the South, the National Parks in the Osa Peninsula are home to monkeys, sloths, caiman and elusive tapirs. Intimate eco-lodge Playa Cativo Lodge is located right on the water, a short boat ride from the air strip of Golfito and across the Golfo Dulce’s Puerto Jimenez – gateway to surf, zip line etc. Further north in the Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa’s Pasha Villa is the best 9-room luxury fully-serviced home rental. Located right on the beach, the area’s boho vibe suits the great surfing.

Pier at Playa Cativo

Inland, the chic Origin’s lodge near Upala features views of both volcanoes and Lake Nicaragua. Horses right on property are a big plus! The beautiful peninsula of Pagagayo is where the country’s “glitz” is focused, centered around the Four Seasons and the chic Prieta Beach Club, with access included in only the best villa rentals. Pura Vida anyone?
