Biking alongside the protected Gialova Lagoon

One of our favourite rides climbs into the quiet hills above Pylos, where olive groves give way to sleepy villages like Dafni. Stop for a Greek coffee before wandering into the traditional Greek Orthodox of Agios Dimitrios, a reminder of the region’s centuries-old history. Continue pedalling, passing by colourful murals by renowned Messinian street artist Skitsofrenis. A self-taught artist from nearby Messenia, Skitsofrenis began painting murals in 2008 and has since become one of Greece’s best-known street artists, using large-scale portraits and public art to tell stories rooted in local life and history, providing an unexpected contrast to the timeless landscape. It’s an easy descent back towards the coast, finishing with a loop around the protected Gialova Lagoon, one of Greece’s most important wetlands and a seasonal stopover for thousands of migratory birds travelling between Africa and Europe.

Making the most of a sunny afternoon at Divari Beach

Once back at the coast, trade your bike for a bathing suit and settle in for a leisurely picnic on Divari Beach. Overlooking the protected Gialova Lagoon you just rode around, its golden sand and crystal-clear waters provide the perfect reward after a morning in the saddle. If you’re still feeling active, a short hike leads to the ancient Tomb of Thrasymedes, the Mycenaean warrior who fought in the Trojan War and later inherited part of King Nestor’s kingdom. Just above the tomb sits Nestor’s Cave, where Greek mythology says the God Hermes hid the cattle he had stolen from Apollo. The short climb is well worth the effort, with spectacular views stretching across the horseshoe-shaped Voidokilia Beach, the Gialova Lagoon, and the bright waters of Navarino Bay.

The Methoni Castle overlooking the Ionian Sea

Continuing south along the coast, arrive in the historic seaside town of Methoni, home to one of Greece’s most impressive Venetian fortresses. Whether you’ve cycled in along the coast, arrived by car, or stepped ashore by boat, the castle’s immense stone walls rising from the sea create an unforgettable welcome. Wander through its winding pathways, discover the small church tucked within the fortress walls, and stroll across the stone causeway to the iconic Bourtzi, the fortified tower perched on its own tiny islet just offshore. For centuries, the fortress stood guard over this stretch of the Mediterranean, protecting the harbour and welcoming travellers arriving from across the sea.

Seasonal flavours at Avli in Methoni

After exploring Methoni’s impressive Venetian fortress, settle in for a leisurely meal at Avli, one of our favourite spots in town. Set in a charming courtyard with both inviting indoor, outdoor and garden dining spaces, just a short stroll from the waterfront. The restaurant showcases modern Greek cuisine, reimagining traditional Messinian flavours with a contemporary touch. It’s the perfect place to recharge, slow down and enjoy the surroundings before returning to the beach or setting off on the next ride.

Liodentra, Kardamyli

Continuing further south, as the road winds into the heart of the Mani Peninsula, where rugged mountains meet the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. The seaside village of Kardamyli makes an ideal base for a few slower days, with independent boutiques offering handcrafted jewellery, locally made ceramics, linen clothing, and other treasures inspired by the Mani Peninsula. Our favourite stay is Liodentra, a beautifully restored four-bedroom stone home offering the privacy and comfort of your own Mediterranean retreat. Set out on your bike and climb into the surrounding hills to the ruins of Kastro (Palia Kastro), where the ascent is rewarded with sweeping views over Kardamyli and coastline below. Back at sea level, spend the afternoon discovering hidden coves, enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the many waterfront restaurants, including our favourite, Tikla Cuzina, or simply wander the town or local beaches. It’s the perfect finale to a journey through Messinia.
