Notes from the road

The Best of Menorca

Menorca! Often referred to as Mallorca’s little sister, this cool island is a total contrast to the other Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Ibiza and even Formentera. Boasting a UNESCO biosphere reserve and Bronze Age historical sites in tandem with tranquil beaches and quieter towns, this underrated island is waiting to be explored.

Son Vell

STAY

  • Top picks on the island are Vestige Son Vell and Torralbenc, all within a short drive to most everything.
  • A word to the wise? Very few of the top hotels are on the water. If sandcastle building and beachfront amenities are a must, check out Melia Villa le Blanc.
  • If you are leaning toward a more urban stay, Faustino Gran in Ciutadella is great. In Mahon, which houses the island’s only airport, Cristine Bedfor is lovely.

Hauser & Wirth

SHOP

  • Check out the Hauser & Wirth Gallery on a small island access from Mahon. Their secluded art shop and café are worth the journey.
  • Shop at the Pretty Ballerina outlet in Ferreries. This local factory shop is run by the Mascaro family who has been making shoes on Menorca for over 100 years. The shoes themselves are cute and comfortable.

DO

  • CITY – Both Ciutadella and Mahon are charming towns – and with expert Gray guides at the helm, they can easily be seen in a few hours or less.
  • BOAT – Charter a boat for a half day or full day. The island has incredible beaches and secluded coves best explored by boat, especially on the calmer south coast. Beaches like Cala Macarelleta have steep, craggy descents from land but are super scenic and fun for a dip or snorkel.
  • ANIMALS – A visit to the Subaida Farm to meet local animals is always a kid approved rendezvous. With Menorca being known for its cheese, it’s insightful to learn the farm’s production and witness their work – along with other meat products sold.
  • HIKE – The iconic Cami de Cavalls trail has little elevation, a rocky northern coast, and a plethora of incredible views. The full 115-mile circumference of the island would take approximately 6-8 days. The trail is well marked and scenic with sparkling sea framed with tall kermes oak and juniper trees.
  • EXPLORE – Stroll through the whitewashed fishing village of Binibeca.
