Notes from the road

JUST BACK FROM: Thailand

Veronique reports on all things Thailand – the land of smiles, silk, temples, beaches and elephants! Read on for feedback from private active travel experts.

Pool at Centara Reserve Koh Samui

Following a private active travel industry meeting in bustling Phuket, V’s first stop was to the chic island of Koh Samui. Thailand’s second largest island offers amazing white sandy beaches. Top spots to stay include the Four Seasons Koh Samui, made famous in the recent White Lotus TV series or the Centara Reserve Koh Samui.

Cocktails at Burma Bar, Four Seasons Golden Triangle

Next up – a flight delivered V to the Golden Triangle, where her stay at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort included an early morning “Walk with Giants”. This was truly an “up close and personal” experience with the on-site herd of elephants. Guests have the option to stay in “bubbles” where they can spend the night among the stars and the elephants. Nearby, at the Four Seasons Tented Elephant Camp, opulent luxury tents offer an alternative immersive stay in the heart of the jungle. Sundowner cocktails include views of Myanmar and Laos in the distance. Also recommended are visits to both the White and Blue temples in Chiang Rai, and the Choui Fong Tea Plantation.

The Grand Palace, Bangkok

Last up – Bangkok!  Tour the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha as well as Wat Arum (Temple of Dawn). Ferries along the Chao Phraya River offer up the best transport to these century-old architectural marvels. Posh digs include the Peninsula hotel which is next to the IconSiam Mall, and across the river from the new Langham, Custom House set to open later this year. At The Capella Bangkok, every elegantly decorated room features a view of the river. The Siam is the ultimate oasis that offers an impressive art and antiquities collection as well as great art-deco style in all suites. Favorite purchase? Jim Thompson Silk pillowcases.
