Ireland

Beloved by travelers for its emerald green landscapes dotted with centuries-old castle hotels, as well as its cozy gastropubs, rugged coastlines and wooly sheep, Ireland is perhaps most celebrated — and rightfully so — for the friendliness of its people. On a Gray & Co. trip, plenty of local experts share their insights – from the quietest roads for biking the Twelve Bens to the most scenic hiking trails along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The capital city of Dublin is a very walkable and welcoming introduction to the country. Begin with a tour of the Trinity College Library, home to the Book of Kells as well as collections of rare books and manuscripts from across Europe. The Irish Whiskey Museum offers an immersive look at Ireland’s distilling traditions, with a tasting of course. The hotel Merrion is a quiet and luxurious base located in the heart of the city. Don’t miss a perfectly poured Guinness at nearby Doyle’s Bar. Dinner at Jamie Oliver’s Checker Lane makes for a fitting finish to a classic Dublin day.

Beyond Dublin, there are myriad places to visit. Featuring the best weather in the country,  the small southwestern village of Kenmare is located close to Killarney. Set between the iconic Ring of Kerry and Ring of Beara, Kenmare is home to cute cafes, lively pubs and one of our favorite places to stay. Perfect for bespoke gatherings, the newly renovated Park Hotel Kenmare is the ultimate base for nearby active explorations by bike and foot. Enjoy the hotel’s array of whiskeys by the fire and the world-class spa. Travellers can spot seals and eagles on a private boat cruise on Kenmare Bay. And the nearby bike ride up — and down — the winding Healy Pass is a “Top Ten” ride for most any savvy cyclist!

Galway is another top gateway to active explorations where shoreline and bog roads make every turn feel cinematic.  Ballynahinch Castle is set among County Connemara’s Twelve Ben mountains near the colourful town of Clifden. At nearby Ashford Castle, the Guinness family castle in Cong, take part in the classic country pursuits: a private falconry session, a horseback ride, or a forest walk with the castle’s dogs.

Other Gray & Co. top Irish picks around the country include the stylish Ballyfin Demesne in County Laois, the charming seaside Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore and the  country’s newest upscale castle Cashel Palace near Tipperary. Slante!
